This is a research paper detailing a study of the mutual intelligibility of Chinese topolects. Dialects were sorted into groups and then it was experimentally tested how much of words and sentences listeners speaking various dialects. Word understanding was tested by sorting isolated words into semantic categories and sentences were checked by translation to one's own dialect. The paper contains several graphs and charts that are very illuminating.
