60 mins speech exercises, and shadowing/ chorusing
Earlier in morning 10 MINS articulation I notice two things. my tongue is sharper. Like literally, it feels actually sharper, more in focus and more on target. I also notice that the text I am listening to and shadowing/chorusing is coming to life. I am able to find within it gems everywhere which are directly useable in my daily speech practice.
45 minutes 0.75h
morning shadowing, noticing my tongue is more energetic, more alive. Sharper and more sounds are correctly placed. Thank you Ollie for this opportunity. It is amazing. I am earning so much.

Articulation. There is a reason I am logging mini sessions. Bec I am intergrating them into the wider study terrain that involves constant Chinese listening, and articulation bursts as a change of pace within that wider terrain.
Also bec articulation is more like a physical workout, which is nice.

so glad you found this useful 😊 I will keep trying it as well.
I just saw your last comment. Yes I would love to do this challenge with you. I think you are further along than I am so I hope I can keep up. I agree I am getting more aware of whats going on at the back of my throat and my tutor also advised about elongating the vowels to see how I may have arrived at 去 instead of 出. This sounds exciting 😊 lets do it.

Outlier Linguistics, on accent and some stuff on chorusing. While running JttWest in Chinese in the background. Steven Krashen "Din in the head." Turns out that there is a name for what I do.
Quote "I find that aural input is much more effective than reading in maintaining the "din in the head" that Stephen Krashen and others have talked about as being very important to language acquisition. This matches up with my experience, that having this involuntary Chinese chatter going on in my head correlates highly with increased fluency, confidence, and willingness to speak as opposed to trepidation."

I realized I was doing a lot of fairly poor grade shadowing while doing other things. Useful for acclimating to coping with language while dealing with life, but not useful for working on accent. So intensive shadowing and echoing of a short passage, drilling down on individual sounds and getting tongue correct. Sore belly. Diaphragm work out akin to serious singing.

Outlier Linguistics, Chorusing, rhythm and intonation. Babies cry in the pitch profile of their native language in the first week after birth. French babies cry with ascending pitch, and German ones with the opposite. Whoah, those cool baby dudes are putting together a whole language operating system starting with phrasal intonation patterning. And doing complicated things like breathing, digesting and... well, communicating. At age one week...

2 Ability to form longer and less tangled sentences.
3 Ability to read aloud correctly in all aspects including phrasal rhythms and tongue/mouth and pitch placements
4 Formation of live speech at realistic speed more or less correctly, (or correctly enough for my level of engagement with the language.)

Listening, sporadic shadowing, learning new words from continuous native listening content (repeated). Claiming 3o mins of a long session .. very comfortable combining all into one activity. Love listening to old people speak in Chinese about their 重要的意义的事情。So touching. To be clear, my understanding of native level content is small. I am still an intermediate level language acquirer. I just like to hang out in the big pool with the big kids.

30 mins shadowing and drills. Has anyone got any good tongue twisters, especially for ji, qi, xi combined with r and sh, AND c/z in any combinations? Sort of, lazy tongue therapy. I bet broadcasters and actors have to learn and practice tons. It would be fun to chuck a couple tongue twisters into the daily adventures.

I am listening/ learning and shadowing sporadically all at the same time. About 3 hours spent, claiming 30 mins here estimating the time spent shadowing, and drilling new words during this. As I put words into 复习 deck, as I practice handwriting their 汉字, I listen to great material w headphones, sporadically tuning in, pulling out vocab of interest and learning it, and shadowing . All three work together seamlessly. Interleaving. Not hard.....
Collecting cultural insights- 我们伟大的时代 Wǒmen wěidà de shídài. Our great era.

Dong Qing, The Reader 1. 朗读者 第一季 I NEED A TRANSCRIPT. Anyone know how I can get one? ChatGpt? How can I turn audio into Text? Ollie do you have a tutorial on your blog? PS Ollie you definitely need to include this in your listening course. Both the material, and the tutorial. Listening is twice as effective with the text. And the texts we want are not easily accessible. Ollie I am crafting my responses for you, as a way of saying thank you for all the work you have done for us. 谢谢您, 拥抱。

After writing a poem, practicing reading it aloud. Trialing a new method based on a singers technique for producing effortless high tones. Applying this to 声调。 有意思。 There does seem to be a reduction in efforting. Then shadowed some native material hosted by Dong Qing, with a number of guests reading aloud their poetry. Crazy. Imitating different accents and even dialect passages. 我非常非常喜欢。This is one of the craziest things about this whole adventure- merging with completely different people. Who I might never meet. Who might never speak to me. Yet, in some crazy way, through shadowing we meet, merge, briefly and then separate...
There is one other wierd thing I am doing. When I am not actively speaking I am listening to the material. Now, while typing I am listening, With earphones. My brain copes effortlessly with two language streams at the same time. Do we even begin to know the potential of out own minds?
I am a very ordinary person. I just shake the snowglobe a lot and watch where the flakes settle. hugshugs from New Zealand.

Exploring 一个新的办法。 (a new method). Listening to a 博客, alternating one sentence shadowing and one sentence listening. 我发现这个方法真的帮据了我。 I found it really helped. Why? The brief rest in between speaking helped me to shadow and produce better quality sounds. (Ollie this write up is for you). Also, alternating two activities kept be better focused. I think this is called Interleaving. Lastly, the intense internal listening bursts brought something to the speaking bursts. It helped me focus on subtle internal sensations while actually speaking. I think this was the most important effect. The improvement in quality of my speaking was noticeable and was sustained throughout the test session.
非常有意思!
My conclusion is that I will continue to explore this avenue. Thanks Ollie for providing the framework for these interesting explorations. 祝福您!
As I write this, I am also listening to a 博客。I developed this method for myself on the Listening Challenge last month. It is surprisingly 舒舒服服. 加油!

Beautiful professionally produced speaking can be really, really helpful. The sounds are formed with great clarity and it is easier both to see and hear what is going on.
Earphones also help more than you would think.
I am working with a lovely example here https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1FQ4y1a7WP/?uid=425631465134793161375750 . The poem 面朝大海 春暖花开
《海子 》.

This is worth checking out. The pace of the speaking is not too fast, yet the content is intended for native audiences.
