its been a wonderful experience to see where am at with reading and the importance of seeing the same words over again and its different uses helps better understand the word. There are so many resource for reading I will try to track my word count better in 2025 as I continue to read and get past graded readers. This has actually given me the confidence to take that leap from light online reading, scripts to an actual book I havent picked out yet.

Typing up my Chinese Breeze reading in english to my tutor resulting in me reading it again.
I love the fact that my understanding of the text have improved.
I had written all over it to translate so when typing my translation has changed slightly from when I read the same page about 3-4 weeks ago.
I was also reading along to last nights podcast and script again this morning before I started this task

Its Saturday 16/11/2024 23:15pm here in London UK but i noticed this log classifies this as sunday 17th. Read on Du Chinese. “Chinese people born in America” find that my comprehension processes for this text was quick so am not sure if this really intermediate but feels good to only look up a few words and save to vocab. Read the learn Taiwanese podcast Episode 1 and a tv show script I had watched earlier in the day whilst cooking.

I am enjoying reading so much I think I might take thay leap and get a physical big book to dive into. Currrently reading from this page I found http://chinesereadingpractice.com/2020/07/19/fable-washing-clothes/

I tried to use Readlang and Language reactor to read a script today but I spent too long of 2 hours fiddling than actual reading but I finally got the laptop out I also wanted to compare the apps and what I could get out of it how to hide the pinyin etc Will be trying to use both during the challenge for content that doesnt have a translation just to check that I am getting the context. I was reading short dialogues that have a video on youtube I will listen to the audio another day. Earlier today I also read along to podcast from Learn Taiwanese will still try before bed to read it without the audio and see how my comprehension goes. I can see I am seeing the words I already know in context more now so thats fun.

I discovered a new podcast today on Spotify whilst listening to my usual https://lear-taiwanese-mandarin.webnode.tw/ and have spent the an hour reading the transcript breaking it down what was said then I will replay to ensure I am pronouncing the right way when reading. I know this is a reading challenge but as a beginner all this areas tend to keep coming up. The podcast is Taiwanese so its in traditional Chinese and auto transcribed but not too much trouble to break it down and use Google translate to convert to simplified. It is a little advance for me but I enjoyed the style of the podcast and the webpage lets you see the translation you dont understand as you read the transcript. I was able to read along as I listened in the Spotify app.
I have spent another hour just reading from the maayot newsletter subscription that was advertised at the bottom of the podcast looks like another Du Chinese style subscription theres just so much reading material hard to find a focus yet but I think i might stick with this podcast reading the transcript it also teaches the vocab. hopefully by the end of the challenge I will be ready for a non graded book but will keep looking.

continue reading the chinese breeze book with my tutor today she read aloud and i repeated her.
I had previously written my translation of the chapter so when reading out loud with her it was easier to recall what the story was about and who I was talking about. Will be doing the following chapter of reading this week in preparation for next week class. I got stuck last night doing IPA pronounciation of C and Z because I got stuck on the word ci ironically the word for word lol Hacking Chinese EP217 had a great podcast on this.

Hacking Chinese ep 218 really good points about focusing on how the word is pronounced through listening and not relying on the pinyin romanisation. I do try and avoid pinyin when reading so I can also test my character recall but this has given me another reason why to depend less on pinyin sound charts and instead use listening to learn how the character is pronounce and perhaps use zhuyin when typing. I do have a habit of forgetting how 这 and 只 is pronounced I think deep reliance on the pinyin is causing this as I am reading aloud in my head i suppose am repeating the habit so dissociation in this challenge might help. I am reading sentences on the MB course today but will try and find a story with audio later today to get into and practice thise more.

having read the beginner tips on this page I think am on the right track I especially like the tip about reading scripts which is what have been doing for listening and pronouciation. I plan to do a bit more of that today as part of my reading I found a transcript that I want to download and read for comprehension then mimick areas that I really enjoy. The video is an 1 hour and 30 mins I just finished watching it. I also heard about an app for those of us who can't stay focused on one thing called Daily Chinese which has a 2500 words reading pack that am going through.

I am just excited to get going reading. I don't want to be all over the place I would prefer to pick a book for the 20 days but I think at this early stage reading shorter articles would give me the motivation to tackle the book. I heard about this site https://hskreading.com/
and as well as M Mandarin Comics. Hoping to find a good book before the end of the challenge that I can slowly progress through as well.
