just enjoying watching tv shows its so much better without the translation and love coming across the words have been learning and seeing use cases. I have been doing a lot of quiz with everyday chinese YouTube channel and that gets me thinking about my sentence structure but I can see it's becoming easier to make a sentence if I truly understand the words. going through the scripts have really helped with understanding the word use and recall that it better

Mum was watching a Taiwanese tv show and it had no English subtitles I became the translator and I dont think I did too bad on the vocab :) Being able to understand Tv shows without translation was the main goal to begin with and it felt great to feel like 40% there. 70% of the words for this particular drama I recognised but the dialogue was very quick. have already downloaded episode 1 transcript to go through at my own pace. The main barriers for understanding was the number of times have seen or use the word to recall it quickly. I noticed I depended on the hanzi on screens and was barely listening. I did at times hear some and comprehend it before I could recognise the hanzi but majority I read, comprehended and gave Mum the English.
I was feeling like am at the level where you cant really see or feel progress but I kept going so having this experience felt motivating like I can do this.
There are audiobooks where am like I understood nothing I need the transcript so I think my reading is ahead of listening. As this challenge comes to an end I havent acquired vocab the usual srs way but the "fun for me" way I am keen to get back to the srs to quickly learn more words but am also realising that the "fun" way also bears fruit.
thanks Janette thats a wonderful offer I would appreciate the guidance on a good tutor to converse with.

have been going through a script for love020 as I noticed in my listening this has a lot of vocab I already know and logging all the words I dont already know granted there are some rare and unusual words its not a period drama and since have seen the show many years ago its easier to not get sucked into wanting to just watch the drama. some useful words some not so useful but found the approach fun. I stop and start throughout the day and I really deep dive into the words meaning. I type into the srt file the chinese and my translation/notes

Its 3:11am on Christmas Eve
The midnight good news call just re-energised me to get back to it and have been picking up from watching Chinese youtubers again going to the market etc. I just learned the word for fluent. 中文就流利了。 流利 means fluent. making a sentence hope its correct 我想要流利变的中文.
this is my attempt 我想说流利的普通话. Personally I believe that if you are actively speaking Chinese with anyone (including conversing out loud with yourself), you already 说流利的普通话。 It is still fluent, even if you are in the beginning fluency stages, in my book. I learned this word when I realized I would be entering this challenge. Then I wrote an entire 4 chapter reader about 孙悟空 (Monkey King's) 流利历险记 Liúlì lìxiǎn jì。。 Fluency Adventures, on his path to learning to speak fluent Mandarin.
4 chapters of writing is amazing well done Janette

Middle of the night cant sleep but inspired by Janette's Haiku's I have landed on songs again and its refreshing to hear the words in other context and discover new words reading lyrics along in spotify.
https://open.spotify.com/track/7IzVSRAULW6qJTLRlg2EJG?si=DeGWr8dOSXOmTyG-pXgAAw&context=spotify%3Aplaylist%3A37i9dQZF1DXahjk49z40fT
For example 没用 ,不用,因该, 感觉 all words have encountered before but just refreshing to hear it and its use here 肯定不会 meaning "definitely not" is new word and many more all from listen to a quick 3 mins song. of course I listened more than once 😂 and even read along with the lyrics. though you cant use songs to accurately pronounce it was nice to recall characters and words as they were being said. Will try to do this activity more its an all rounder, fun and great for reviewing.
traditional characters only on songs I found on Spotify but could just be because I landed on great Taiwanese artists. Its inspired me to look for the same song elsewhere and YouTube have lyric videos already found it with pinyin but not simplified characters. https://youtu.be/CSu9MbTEiB8?si=1drE3t8TfFskQ7OJ
Full moon. Can disturb sleep. When I cannot sleep I put on Jada's recording of Journey to the West (MBP Pro "Silent Book") return to bed and let it play slight;y softly, with the screen light turned out. It soothes me, gives me lovely listening and then....zzzzz. You do not want to use a your tube clip with adds for this!

Watched a new released video from MB and learnt some new conjunctions very interesting then this morning I went over and over again through a YouTube short every single sentence I either learnt a new word https://youtube.com/shorts/I1kkJPLe4Ho?si=RqQyCCbsjKR5yfYw or how to use it more effectively.
OMgosh I checked it out. I adore the "hat" . I totally want one. plenty vocab there for me to learn too. I love the way learning vocab in context automatically teaches you the grammar. Which is what this is about. hugs
yes the hat...😅 hugs

holiday season distractions but revised always great when i review a word and then i hear it over and over. was discussing how does one say listening with a friend yesterday as most encounters we had is "to hear" 你去听,听不懂,听到,听见, 听力,听说, 听取, 收听,听信, 听闻。。。。I know it depends on what's happening.

I had the opportunity to practice with a friend today and not so much learned any new vocabs but used got a chance to use the ones I had learned it was 2 hours but I would say only 30mins really count towards vocab challenge the ability to recall and use what I have been learning
Janette amazing I just put them into translate and reading through. This deserves a reading out loud practice which I shall attempt tomorrow will send you a link to the pitch tool on MB.
oops comment on wrong post 😂
30 mins, but worth its weight in gold... because these words are now "live", where before they were just in the mental repository hibernating..
so true they are now living words 😊

I was learning same tone words that make a sentence e.g 242424. or 131313 or 232323 etc figured if I keep this in mind they will be useful reference points for tones. The words are useful sentence words.
Whoah! Wild idea. I love it. You CD compose some wild sentences. hmmmm, thinking.... I compose weird poems for vocab purposes and personal delight because I love writing poems. Here is one-早十点,三十一分 《雾鸟jraven》 安静的和尚坐着 不安静的和尚打架 不安静的和尚打架坐着的和尚 安静的和尚坐着上在打架的和尚 噢。安静的和尚坐着。。。 monk in peace sitting monk without peace hitting monk witout peace hitting sitting monk monk with peace sitting on hitting monk.
thank you, I didnt even think of making a poem out of it what a great idea 🤔 maybe even a song
hahaha, I just played with a silly bandit rhyme to memories a tone change rule (3-3 to 2-3) 美好勇敢土匪老板 洗澡时有没有雨伞? 洗澡时雨伞有勇敢 土匪的美好老板? 哇! A wonderful and brave bandit boss Is there an umbrella when taking a shower? An umbrella is brave when taking a shower A wonderful bandit boss? Wow! hahaha thanks for the idea Funmi!
It should look like- 美好勇敢土匪老板 洗澡时有没有雨伞? 洗澡时雨伞有勇敢 土匪的美好老板? 哇!
it will not let me. The poem should have 4 lines of 8 syllables---美好勇敢土匪老板/// 洗澡时有没有雨伞?/// 洗澡时雨伞有勇敢/// 土匪的美好老板? 哇!
Janette amazing I just put them into translate and reading through. This deserves a reading out loud practice which I shall attempt tomorrow will send you a link to the pitch tool on MB.

already forgetting to log this not a good start to the challenge 😂 I took a whole day to do the 51 question test yesterday but encountered lots of new words that am still not quiet sure if i should be collecting and reusing or just trust the tool and let it just keep coming up when it wants to. I spent time trying to understand the use of some prepositions words that keeps coming up in different use case e.g dui
Dui also confuses me! Just when I think I have a grasp of it, I see it used in a new way and I have to completely rethink my understanding. One source thats help me out is the Chinese Grammar Wiki at allsetlearning.com, they have lots of example sentences with translations!

using an app to test and picking up new vocab as I do the test. also picking up from watching tv shows today was words like 感慨 still need to spend time reading how to best store/reuse this words but am luckily re-encountering the words in other apps and readings I am doing.
Hey Funmi! freaking awesome. What app are you using for testing? I am asking because I want to implement daily testing, in the context of my just having ditched SRS for this 20 day challenge. Fine to answer on MBP Pro. Cheers dear heart!

"I was feeling like am at the level where you cant really see or feel progress" 。。。hahaha, This is intermediate and the beginning of fluency (regardless of where you are in the MBP course levels). The end of being a student, and the beginning of being a user, a fluent speaker. Looking from outside I can see it, you have arrived. 开始流利。Kāishǐ liúlì- beginning fluency Now the hard work and the fun starts! WELCOME AND FREAKING WELL DONE. I would be hard pushed to follow a Taiwanese TV show, let alone translate at the same time for mum. Mum can be proud of you. Er... maybe this is not your goal, but it might be time to think soon about getting a tutor for conversation classes? (not regular classes, but just chatting classes...I am happy to give you some pointers about how to find one if you become interested.
