I use Anki to study vocabulary, and I spend 20-25 minutes a day reviewing some 100 cards plus new vocabulary (I always handwrite when recalling). My goal this month is to start working on the huge list of leech flashcards (some 300) and to figure out new methods of learning these difficult words and characters. Lots of those words were added in form of recognition only cards, thus the difficulty to retain them. I'll transform the cards into both recognition and recall, in order to learn to write these words. I will add examples and if the word remains difficult, I'll try to write my own sentences and then get them corrected by native speakers. I will take a look at the character's etymology and write my own mnemonics, and add pictures to the card when the word allows it.
With help of my poster of the 1500 most frequent characters (by mandarinposter.com) I'll make a list of 100 characters that I don't know yet or that I don't know well. For instance, I can recognize and write "界" in "世界" but I don't know of any other words containing this character. As it doesn't seem to work on its own, I'll learn new words such as "藝術界".
