This is a good introduction to tones in Chinese. I personally think that tone pairs is the right way to go, mostly because they incorporate all important tone changes in Chinese. Therefore, as soon as you think you have basic pronunciation down (initials, finals, tones for single characters), you should get started with words. John Pasden's tone pair drills is a very good place to start!
