To Live 活着 is a Chinese epic film directed by Zhang Yimou in 1994, starring Ge You, Gong Li,

It's about a rich man who loses his fortune through a gambling addiction around the time of the civil war and communist revolution in China. The film follows the story of he and his family through several decades of Chinese history. It's a wonderfully shot and acted film and really interesting for anyone interested in the history of the communist era. It's a modern Chinese cinema classic.

The film was banned in mainland China by the Chinese State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television due to its critical portrayal of various policies and campaigns of the Communist government. In addition, Zhang was banned from filmmaking for two years.
